It's not my problem: i wont be here in 5 years
Using property as a store of wealth? Nothing inherently wrong with that.
But it’s created a “throwaway” housing market—like fast fashion. One that prioritises appearances over substance.
If you’re not planning to live in a house longer than it takes to flip it and cash in on the value gain, why would you care how it performs over its intended 30+ year lifespan? You wouldn’t. You’re not there to care—you’re there to “get ahead.”
So, builders are giving you exactly what you want: glitz and sizzle, without substance. And why wouldn’t they? They know you won’t be around after the 6 years and 6 months—when the structural warranty runs out. Most of those warranties aren’t even transferable to new buyers. So who cares about quality when it looks good and can turn a bigger profit?
This is the state of residential construction. Builders’ designs and specifications are just a mirror of what consumers ask for.
So if you want something better, you have to demand it—otherwise, the choices have already been made.
The bed is made, and we’ll all be sleeping in it for the lifetime of that home.
